Prayer Guide – Week 17 (Feb 12-18)

Kyushu is the southernmost region of Japan, including the islands of Okinawa prefecture. This region is where Christianity has its longest roots, starting with the Jesuits’ arrival in 1549, and some of its most painful history.

Fukuoka is the major city in this region. Pray for God to strengthen churches and give a vision for ministry throughout Kyushu. There is a particular need for church planting in Saga prefecture.

Natural disasters such as flooding, earthquakes, and mudslides occur in most regions of Japan. Pray for Christian centers like the Kyushu Christ Disaster Relief Center that coordinates churches and volunteers to help with relief work and donations.

In 2020 more than 28% of Japan’s population was aged 65 and over. This is increasing as Japan’s population shrinks due to declining birthrates and a growing number of “lifelong singles.”

There are enormous long-term implications. The healthcare and pension systems are under stress. A growing number of elderly people live alone and are becoming socially isolated.

Christians are also trying to reach out. Some churches run exercise classes or host seniors’ lunches. There are even elderly Christians who volunteer in nursing homes, seeking to befriend their peers.

• Give thanks for faithful elderly believers and pray they will share their faith with their peers.
• Pray for wisdom for the Japanese government and other leaders making decisions about issues such as healthcare, pensions, and community programs.

• To provide appropriate and precise support activities in the midst of ever-changing local needs.
• To protect the lives of people in areas where lifelines are not yet in place.
• Please pray for the protection of the work of Noto Help, which is a contact point for receiving volunteers.
• Through this, may Christian churches unite to show God's love and return glory to the Lord.
• That those affected by the disaster would be touched by the love of Christ, be sustained in their lives, and be led to salvation.
